Kelp setup guide

Play your MP3 and M4B audiobooks on Android.

Start with audiobook files you own or have permission to use. Kelp plays local files; it does not provide an audiobook catalog.

1. Put the files on your phone

Use an accessible folder for your MP3, M4A, or M4B files. For a book split into several files, keep its parts together in a dedicated book folder. File numbering such as 01, 02, and 03 can make the intended order clearer.

Download or copy the actual audio before you start. A web shortcut or a file available only inside another service is not a local audiobook file.

2. Choose your audiobook folder

Open Kelp and choose the folder through Android’s system picker. Grant access to the audiobook folder you want Kelp to scan. Kelp does not need broad access to every file on your phone.

Android may restrict selection of some system folders. If the picker cannot grant access to your location, use an ordinary folder available to the picker.

3. Open a book and keep your place

Choose a book after the library scan. Set playback speed from 0.5x to 3x, use chapter navigation where chapters are available, and add bookmarks for places you want to revisit. Kelp saves progress when you return.

For bedtime, use a sleep timer or an end-of-chapter timer. Local playback works with the screen off and in the background.

If a book is missing

  • Check that the file is MP3, M4A, or M4B and actually stored on your phone.
  • Check that it is inside the folder you gave Kelp access to.
  • Allow the scan to finish after adding or updating files.
  • If you moved the folder, select the new location in Kelp.

For help, email ottersuitecontact@gmail.com with your Android version, Kelp version, file type, and what happened. Avoid attaching audiobook files or private data unless support asks for a minimal sample you have permission to share.

Moving from another player

Reuse your existing audio files when they are accessible to Kelp. Saved positions, bookmarks, and history from another player should not be assumed to transfer. Note the position of your current book and keep the old app until you have checked playback in Kelp.
