Choosing an audiobook player

Start with how you keep your books.

Several good players can handle local audiobooks. The useful question is which workflow fits you. This guide is published by OtterSuite, the maker of Kelp.

Local files or a library server?

If your audiobook files already live on your Android phone, a local player can be a straightforward choice. If you want a library served from your own server, start with a server and its compatible clients.

What these players have in common

Saved progress, speed controls, bookmarks, and sleep timers are common audiobook-player features. They are useful reasons to choose a dedicated player, but they do not make Kelp unique. Read each current listing for its full feature set and supported formats.

When to try Kelp

Try Kelp if you want to play your existing Android audiobook folder locally, with a focused interface and an optional lifetime Pro tier. Pro is worth considering if collections, editing, listening insights, or casting to Chromecast and Google TV fit the way you listen.

Kelp is not presented here as an Audiobookshelf client, a cloud synchronization service, or an audiobook store. It plays books already on your device.

Check one book before switching

Use a familiar audiobook to check file order, chapter navigation, speed, and playback with the screen off. Write down your current listening position. Do not delete your previous player or assume its progress and bookmarks will migrate.
